Abstract

The Law Code of Bumi Kurinci, Si Lu:njur Kurinci is around 622 years old and is well kept in Rumah Gedang. Preservation of the codex is carried out according to local wisdom through Kenduri Sko which is a traditional ceremony of the Kerinci tribe in the context of removing harto pusako (heirloom) from the storage area. To pull out the codex from the storage area, it must comply with the customary rules that have been in force so far. The codex may only be handed down by traditional leaders at a predetermined or mutually agreed, must prepare tools and so on. This action certainly has a meaning that represents the values of the life of the Kerinci people. This research was conducted to explore the meaning of the signs contained in the preservation of the Code of Bumi Kurinci, Si Lu:njur Kurinci. This study aims to describe the Law Code of Bumi Kurinci, Si Lu: njur Kurinci as harto pusako (heirloom), analyze the chronological and cultural meaning of the process of preserving the codex, and explain the factors of local wisdom in preserving the codex. This research uses qualitative methods with field research in Kerinci Regency, Jambi Province. Data collection was carried out through interviews, observation and documentation. Roland Barthes' semiotic theory is used to analyze research problems. The results of this study indicate that the preservation of the Law Code of Bumi Kurinci, Si Lu:njur Kurinci is influenced by the cultural values of the Kerinci tribe. These cultural values are influential in saving the codex which has survived hereditary from the 14th century to the early 21st century or the equivalent of 622 years. The cultural values of the Kerinci tribe in the process of preserving the codex are contained in three main aspects. First; the value of the Law Code as harto pusako (heirloom) consists of the history of the existence of the codex, the naming of the codex, the contents of the codex, the Islamic aspects of the codex, and the procedures for opening the codex and the meaning of the codex. Second; the value of the Law Code preservation process includes the culture of codex preservation, the place where the codex is stored, the ritual of lowering the codex, the parties involved in the codex, and the meaning of the signs in codex preservation. Third; values on the factors supporting the preservation of the Law Code, namely karang setio, sacredness, customary rules, trust and fines. The five supporting factors for the codex preservation are representations of Islamic values, even though Islamic values are inherent in codex preservation process, they are still packed with the culture of the Kerinci tribe. Then the three values of these cultural aspects complement each other in the process of codex preservation, and can be seen as a system of indigenous cultural values of the Kerinci tribe that is believed to be in the maintenance of the codex.
