Abstract

Having children is an important aspect of marriage. It ensures the continuation of humanity on earth and the proclamation of Islam's symbol until the Day of Judgment. Having children also entails being responsible for meeting their educational and developmental needs, which is a consequence of building a family. In order to fulfill this responsibility, proper birth control methods are necessary, including the use of 'azl or interrupted intercourse (coitus interruptus). There is a scholarly debate regarding the permissibility of 'azl as a method for contraception. Nevertheless, it remains the most economical and uncomplicated option. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the perspective of Imam al-Ghazali on 'azl, which is objective and relevant to modern family life. The analysis will focus on context of maqāṣid ash-sharī'ah and establish its relevance to Indonesia's family planning program. This study employs library research in a descriptive-analytic methodology. The analytical tool is the theory of 'azl, family planning, and maqāṣid asy-syarī'ah. The aim of this investigation is to outline Imam al-Ghazali's perspective on the law of 'azl, analyzed from the point of view of maqāṣid asy-syarī'ah. Additionally, the relevance of 'azl as a contraceptive method and its relationship with the family planning program in Indonesia are explored. Based on the research results, Imam al-Ghazali permits the practice of 'azl. This permission is associated with various objectives, some of which are prohibited. The permissibility of 'azl is a way of promoting a healthy and flourishing household, and has maṣlaḥah value as a means of safeguarding religion, soul, mind, offspring, and property. In addition, Islam permits the practice of 'azl as a means of avoiding hardship (masyaqqah) when fulfilling the obligation to establish a household. With the permissibility of 'azl in Islamic law, the religion also aids the government's attempts to form an optimal family and achieve steady population growth via the family planning initiative.
