Abstract

Yogyakarta, as the cultural centre of Java, is not only known for its cultural heritage, but also as the birthplace of various religious movement communities, such as Muslim United (Real Masjid 2.0). In 2018, this community was born starting with a grand event that focused on the hijrah movement. It was founded by several religious figures, and has attracted the attention of many youths across Indonesia. Muslim United combines religious activities with modern approaches, such as using social media and organising various programmes to reach out to young people. However, in the course of its development, there were displacements and internal conflicts that resulted in a split in the community. The presence of elites within the community influenced policies and changed the focus of da'wah towards the ideology of Kaffah Islam. The presence of the ideology brought by the activists of this puritanical organisation is interpreted as a trigger for internal conflict within the community. Despite its positive intentions, the ideology threatens the initial vision that has been agreed upon. This study employs a qualitative research approach, employing methods such as interviews, participant observation, and documentation for data collection. The informants, totaling six individuals, were selected using the key informant technique—individuals possessing crucial and diverse information essential for the research. The primary informants directly engage in the social interactions under examination within the Muslim United community. The theoretical framework applied in this study is the elitist theory proposed by Gaetano Mosca, utilized to examine how the dominant elite instrumentalize religion in shaping the identity of Muslim United. Additionally, the research investigates the repercussions of internal elitist conflicts on religious instruments within the identity of Muslim United in Yogyakarta. Based on the research that has been done, the researcher found the following meetings: First, the conflict process that occurs in the elite of the Muslim United organisation is passed through three main stages in the form of changing the old elite to the new elite in the Muslim United organisation, the existence of a new ideological conflict that emphasizes the understanding of Puritan Islam which is in accordance with Mosca's theory that elite groups tend to have different visions and ideologies that can trigger internal conflict, then the struggle for structures and resources. Second, the impact of the emergence of elites in Muslim United Yogyakarta is in the form of elite divisions in the Muslim United organisation in the form of the resignation of several organisations which led to the rupture of friendship, the transformation of ukhuwah ideology towards Kaffah Islam, and changes in the orientation of the Muslim United organisational movement which led to negative responses to new policies due to incompatibility between policies thus creating disagreement, disharmony among members, and loss of vision and mission within the organisation.
