Abstract

Resilience is the ability of an individual to overcome adversity, such as sexual violence. The purpose of this study is to better understand and assess the fortitude of victims of online gender-based violence, or sexual abuse that takes place in the internet sphere. This study focuses on victim resilience, the types of gender-based violence victims encounter online, and the implications for social work practice. The topic of online gender-based violence as a novel manifestation of sexual violence in the digital sphere was not discussed in several earlier research on the resiliency of victims of sexual abuse in Indonesia. Additionally, not much research has been done on its significance in the field of social work. There is ongoing study on this topic, but it focuses on how social work may address child victims of sexual violence. This research examines phenomena related to the issue of online gender-based violence experienced by several female students at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta as a case study. This research is a type of qualitative research using a case study approach. The subjects of this research were students at UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Yogyakarta. There were 5 (five) informants who were the subjects of this research. This research uses resilience theory as a theoretical framework that emphasizes the process above the result. Furthermore, the social ecological resilience theory, which views resilience as a component of a social system or environment rather than only an issue of personal ability, is applied in this study. Resilience is a process that is shaped by an individual's capacity as well as the source system, which is that person's relationship with the social context in which they live. This study draws multiple conclusions. First, there are four forms of online gender-based violence experienced by UIN Sunan Kalijaga students, namely sexting, cyber harassment, online defamation, and cyber stalking/surveillance/tracking. Second, the social resource system factor of victims plays a significant role in forming the resilience of the victims. These factors influence the formation of individual resilience, such as optimism, empathy and good emotional regulation, their calm attitude or having the courage to fight the perpetrator, and reporting to the authorities. Third, social work plays an important role in undertaking interventions, such as making efforts to raise awareness of issues related to online gender-based violence, providing access to medical and psychological services, prevention efforts, advocating for the rights and protection of victims, increasing the resilience of victims, and to building networks that can help the victims in the process of their recovery.
