Abstract

The Badudus tradition is a tradition of the Banjar tribe, especially in South Kalimantan, Tabalong Regency, precisely in Tanjung District. This tradition in the form of bridal bathing is usually carried out a few days before the wedding ceremony is held. This tradition was originally only allowed to be carried out by descendants of the Banjar royal family or only the nobles, after the Banjar kingdom collapsed the tradition only had to be carried out by several bloodlines, but ordinary Banjar people could also carry out the tradition. This tradition is an obligation that must be carried out by the bride and groom who in practice use tools and materials in accordance with the philosophy of the meaning contained therein. This tradition is a symbol of purification before entering the next stage of life, namely family, as well as a symbol of asking for protection from Allah SWT in order to avoid disturbances from spirits before the wedding ceremony and in married life. The traditions that have been carried out before Islam are still carried out to this day even though there are transformations in them. This transformation of local traditions occurred after the entry of Islam. Judging from the relationship between Islam and culture, two things must be clarified, namely Islam as a cultural reality and Islam as a socio-cultural conception. The Badudus tradition in ancient times was carried out on the teachings of ancestors not based on religion because their beliefs were still Kaharingan. As time progressed, local traditions began to change following the religion that had entered the Banjar tribe community. The change of the local tradition of Badudus into an Islamic tradition cannot be separated from the role of community leaders in communicating Islamic teachings to the Badudus tradition. This transformation process is in the form of persuasive communication, which aims to influence the thoughts, opinions, views, attitudes and actions of individuals to society. This research uses descriptive qualitative research using a phenomenological approach. This research will reveal the transformation of Banjar's local tradition, namely Badudus to Islamic tradition, by collecting various data with a direct approach with informants then analyzed. The data collection techniques used are observation, interview, and documentation. By interviewing informants, this research will obtain data directly from figures who carry out the Badudus tradition. The results of this study will describe the data that has been obtained from informants associated with ritual communication theory and persuasive communication theory, namely information-processing theory developed by William J. McGuire.
