Abstract

The Sunni-Syiah conflict in Jember did not just happen once, but occurred from 2006 to 2013. The last case in 2013 resulted in 1 death. This conflict is part of a long history of religious conflicts in Indonesia. Even though the interaction between Sunnis and Syiahs before 2006 was considered harmonious and there was no conflict. This conflict came after IJABI (Indonesian Ahlul Bait Congregation Association) entered Jember in 2006. Sunni groups considered that the entry of this organization could change the order of society, whether political, social, religious or economic. The focus of the objects studied are the Sunni group and the Syiah group. The aim of this research is to find out why this conflict occurred and what the implications of this conflict were for the people of Jember. The focus of this research uses conflict and consensus theory from Ralf Dahrenndorf. Therefore, this research uses historical research methods, the data collection method is carried out by means of interviews with the help of key informants. Then the documentation method, namely collecting data from previous research and also documentation from the Jember government, Sunni group and Syiah group. The results of this research show that there are several factors that cause this conflict to occur, namely the Truth Claim factor, where each person claims that their belief is correct. From economic conflict, the factor is social jealousy, and from the social sector, competition for the authority of social groups. The implications of this conflict are that society is more individualistic and prioritizes its own interests, religion is considered something radical and most importantly, minority groups are not well accepted by the general public.
