Abstract

Al-Jazirah and CNN Arabic’s coverage of vision Saudi 2030 policies resulted in different representations because it’s influenced by different ideologies between the two mass media. Al-Jazrah and CNN Arabic’s ideologies are influenced by interests of their respective groups to lead opinions to audiences in seeing the phenomenon of change in Saudi Arabia. The ideology of Al-Jazrah and CNN Arabic in the reporting of vision Saudi 2030 policies was studied with the critical discourse analysis model of Teun A. Van Dijk. Critical discourse analysis by van Dijk is used to reveal the ideology of Al-Jazrah and CNN Arabic in the reporting of vision Saudi 2030 policies. This research expalains the relationship between the dimensions of text, social cognition and social context in news texts shows the ideology of the two mass media. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach nd the data of this research is taken from the www.aljazeera.net website page and arabic.cnn.com website page in 2017 to 2018 regarding two themes: the policy of permission to open a cinema and the policy of premission to drive a car for women in Saudi Arabia. The results showed that Al-Jazrah tends to report positively on vision Saudi 2030 policies because the Saudi Arabian goverment has abandoned Islamic attributes. This kind of Al-Jazrah news representations is influenced by the ideology of coservatism from Qatar. In addition, Al-Jazrah’s negative presentation was also driven by the problems between Saudi Arabian and Qatar which relations in 2017. Meanwhile, CNN Arabic tends to report positively on vision Saudi 2030 policies because the Saudi goverment has upheld human rights in Saudi Arabia. This kind of good cyanide news representation is influenced by the ideology of liberalism from the United States. In addition, positive representations are also driven by bilateral relations between Saudi Arabian and the United States, especially in the era of President Donald Trump
