Abstract

Research on medicinal plants has made a revolutionary breakthrough in the treatment of male sexual problem. Phytochemical drug treatment is usually based on a holistic philosophy and therefore very different from the practice of "western " medicine. Phytochemical drug treatments focus their healing mechanisms on the root of the problem, i.e. the patients' inability to control the proper function of their whole body system. Hence medicinal plants treatments manage sexual dysfunction and male fertility in the frame of sexual dysfunction as a whole entity. A number of different medicinal plants have shown promising results in the treatment of a variety of male sexual problems. This paper will discuss several important aspects of aphrodisiac plants as well as preliminary studies regarding them in Indonesia. Difficulties inherent to activity guided-isolation and the specific requirements ofbioassays are also discussed.
