Abstract

This research analysis the influence of user education toward the use of library capabilities by new students of 2014 academic year in Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta University (UMY) library. This research is aimed (1) to understand about perception of new student toward user education process in UMY Library; (2) to understand about use of library capabilities by new student in UMY Library; (3) to understand about influence of user education toward the use of library capabilities by new students in UMY library. This research is a quantitative research applying descriptive method. The population of the research is 6259 new students. The samples are calculated by the researcher using non probability sampling technique. The samples of the research is 98 respondent who are chosen incidentally by the researcher. The main data are collected by distributing quetionare which applies likert scale of four alternative answer. Meanwhile, the supporting data are collected from the interview, observation and documentation. For the calibration and reliability, it uses correlation of product moment as well as alpha cronbach. Data analysis uses mean, grand mean correlation of product moment, simple linear regression and hypothesis testing. This research resulted in three conclusions: (1) Perception of new students about the user education in UMY Library is a 2,97 categorized as good; (2) The use of library capabilities by new student is a 3,06 categorized as good; (3) There is influence between user education toward the use of library capabilities by new students in UMY Library uses product moment correlation with result of 0,612 with a strong influence. large coefficient of determination (R Square) is 0.375, which means the influence of user education toward the use of library is 37,5%. Researcher suggest that librarians improve mentoring and guidance to new students while user education ongoing and the current practice of using the OPAC.
