Abstract

The aim of the research was to find the al-Hȃkim's role in the development of "Dȃr al-Hikmah" library.The benefit of the research was to give visualization and understanding about the al-Hȃkim's role toward "Dȃr al-Hikmah" library. Hopefully by this research, the explanation about the al-Hȃkim's role in the development of "Dȃr al-Hikmah" library can give insight in scientific treasure to the readers. This research was historical research in the type of library research which had descriptive-analytic characteristic using the sociological approach.The data collecting techniques were reading, scrutinizing and note taking. To analyze the data used the analysis technique toward the content in some stages, they were heuristic, critics, interpretation and historiography. The data validity test was carried out by the dilligence in observation and the referential sufficience. By this research it can be concluded that the al- Hȃkim's role in the development of "Dȃr al-Hikmah" library included three categories, they were: 1) a good library organization with the organization structure consists ofthe head of the library and library staffs who work in shelving, classification and cataloging, copying and book binding, and book preservation.The librarians were also helped by the staffs, the workers, and the servants in the library organizing, 2) the collections development focused on the completeness of collection by purchasing and the estimate for repairing damaged collections was provided, 3) library as science and learning centre. By this research, the researcher gives the recommendation so the al-Hȃkim's role in the development of "Dȃr al-Hikmah" library will be researched further. Therefore, treasure intelectualism in Islam civilization related to library will be more resulted in the form of texts. Besides, it will be exposed that big libraries in the age of Islam are not only in Baghdad and Cordova, but also in Egypt.
