Abstract

Library is one of service providers in the field of education which aims to support the progress of the teaching, learning process, and research for its visitors. Therefore, the library must provide good service while still paying attention to the convenience of visitors in accessing information and utilizing library facilities. This study has some aims, such as 1) to determine how many decibels (dB) the noise level in the reading room of regional library in Kulon Progo Regency ; 2) to find out whether the noise level in the reading room of regional library in Kulon Progo Regency has met the noise standard that has been determined by the Regulation of the Minister of Health No. 718 of 1987;. 3) to find out what factors cause noise and how to deal with noise in the reading room of regional library in Kulon Progo Regency. The type of this research is descriptive quantitative. The method of the data collection is done by observation and documentation. The noise level measurement is divided into 4 zones with 4 measurement points which are divided into three measurement times. The results of the research on the noise level in the reading room of the library and archives service in Kulon Progo Regency is 56.6 dB. It can be concluded that the noise level in the reading room has not met the noise level standard that has been determined by the Decree of the Minister of Health No. 718/Men.Kes/Per/XI/1987 and the Minister of the Environment No.48/MENLH/11/1996 about the noise level in the educational environment that is equal to 45-55 dB. The factors which caused the noise are divided into two, namely; factors from within the reading room environment and factors from the outside reading environment. The efforts that can be made are by installing noise-absorbing materials such as foam, fibers, curtains, carpets and doing greenery in the environment outside the building by planting trees.
