Abstract

This research focuses on the study of the Islamic modernity project to build a new human in the thought of Thaha Abdurrahman and Abdullah bin Bayyah. This project of thought is a reaction to modern realities in the Western world. The modern realities of the Western world which are marked by domination and hegemony over developing or third-world countries are seen in the economic, cultural, armed forces, and colonial political sectors. The emergence of colonialism did not stop during World War I and II but continues to this day. Of course, this is contrary to the spirit of modernism which aims to enlighten people. Departing from these facts, this study presents the critical contribution of Taha Abdurahman and Abdullah bin Bayyah as a critique of modern realities of the Western world through human values by reading the ethics (akhlāq) of Thaha Abdurrahman and the values contained in Islamic sharia (al-maqāṣid al-Islāmiyyah) in the perspective of Abdullah bin Bayyah. In the research approach, the researcher uses the theory of “multiple modernities.” The researcher sees that this theory is appropriate to be used to examine the intellectual discourse of Thaha Abdurrahman and Abdullah bin Bayyah about Islamic modernity and their position as an alternative to modernity in the world in general and Western modernity in particular. This is due to modernity with the meaning of “newness” which differs between experiences of civilization of the nation. Based on the reference to Thaha Abdurrahman’s Islamic religious discourse, the researcher can judge that the critical dialogue of modernity has formed a new synthesis that has crystallized in the term “Islamic modernity” as an alternative to the Western conception of modernity. As a foothold, Thaha Abdurrahman uses moral theory as an alternative to modernity. Likewise, Abdullah bin Bayyah, in order to build a modern Islamic society, corrected Western human rights and tried to bring back the superiority of human rights in Islam which is different from modern Western human rights. Abdullah bin Bayyah also described those human rights in the value/purpose of Islamic sharia (al-maqāṣid al-Islāmiyyah) for human dignity. Abdullah bin Bayyah’s interest in Islamic human rights is a criticism of modern thought discourse in the context of Western human rights. In summary, the discourse analysis of humanism thought needs to be re-evaluated from the point of view of Thaha Abdurrahman and Abdullah bin Bayyah by reconstructing the New Human in the modern era by referring to religion. Thaha Abdurrahman and Abdullah bin Bayyah want these human values to be the main points in the concept of Islamic modernity, both theoretically and practically.
