Abstract

In society, a culture of objectification is formed that makes beauty standards to judge women's appearance, women are considered as objects that are free to be judged. Women then learn and recognize these demands as part of themselves, where individuals are concerned with the role in the physical aspects that can be seen (skin color and body shape) compared to aspects of competence that cannot be seen (health and stamina) which is then referred to as self-objectification. Self-objectification is influenced by many factors, some of which are age, body mass index (BMI), education level of self-esteem, perfectionism, relationships with other people, mass media, and compassion. The factor studied in this study is the relationship with the compassion factor and the intensity of its use on Instagram. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between compassion and the intensity of social media use on self-objectification in early adult women. This research is a correlational quantitative research. The target population in this study were early adult women in Yogyakarta who actively used Instagram with a total sample of 157 people. The sampling technique used in this research is accidental sampling. Data collection in this study used a Likert scale consisting of a self-objectification scale, a compassion scale, and an Instagram usage intensity scale. The results of Multiple Regression stated that the major hypothesis was accepted with a significance value of 0.000 (p <0.05) and the effective contribution of the major hypothesis was 0.235 (23.5%). While the minor hypothesis of each variable is accepted with a significance level of 0.000 (p <0.05) on the compassion variable with an effective contribution of 0.161 (16.1%), and 0.001 (p <0.05) on the variable intensity of social media use, namely instagram with an effective contribution of 0.065 (6.5%). Thus, it can be stated that the research hypothesis is accepted, namely that there is a relationship between compassion and intensity of using Instagram with self-objectification in early adult women.
