Abstract

Parents' expectations are ideal targets or desires that parents want for their children regarding academic, career or other achievements that are believed to occur in the future. This study aims to describe the dynamics of parents' expectations of high achieving children in poor families in choosing a career. Informants in this study were three parents of high achieving children in poor families. The criteria for informants were: a) parents of outstanding students in class XII (twelve) at MA Mu'allimin Mu'allimat Rembang; b) income below the poverty line (below IDR 414,977 per capita per month); c) outstanding children who are ranked in the top 5 or win competitions. This qualitative descriptive research uses a phenomenological approach, with data collection techniques in the form of interviews, observation, and documentation. The data analysis technique used is data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing (verification). The results of the study show that there are several things that illustrate the expectations of parents for high achieving children in poor families in choosing a career. It was found that parents not only wanted their children to have good and satisfying academic achievements or achievements, but also hoped that their children would have useful knowledge and good morals. The expectations of the parents are accompanied by planning, exploration, information competency, and decision making through joint discussions.
