Abstract

This research aims to determine differences in students reading interests of men and women, know the condition of interest in reading male students, and know the condition of female students interest in reading at SMA Negeri 1 Sleman Prambanan, Yogyakarta. This research included in this type of field research. Data collection method used was a questionnaire, documentation, and observation. Techniques of data analysis using independent sample t-test and the data processed by using SPSS version 16. The results were no significant differences between students reading interest of men and women in SMA Negeri 1 Prambanan Sleman Yogyakarta, the condition of interest in reading male students ranked high with an average mean value of 3.53, with the highest indicators, which aim read with a mean of 4.09, and lowest indicators, namely the intensity reading with a mean of 3.10, the condition of female students reading interest in SMA Negeri 1 Prambanan Sleman Yogyakarta classed high enough with the mean average value of 3.38, with the highest indicator, that is the purpose of reading with a mean of 3.97, and lowest indicators, namely the motivation to read and the environment with a mean of 2.93. Based on the results of these studies researchers provide advice to the library to increase students reading interest of men and women, one of which is to add a new collection that can entertain, give information, and knowledge, such as fiction books with an attractive cover and follow the trend is in progress, namely young adult novels, comics, short stories, and also published series, such as magazines, tabloids, newsletters education, education journals, and newspapers.
