Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types and functions of social deixis in the film Born a King (2019). To answer these problems, the researcher uses two theories: the theory of social deixis by Stephen C. Levinson to reveal forms of social deixis and the theory of Janet Holmes, known as the theory of social dimensions, which is used to determine the function of each deixis in film. The study results show three hundred and seven forms of relational social deixis divided into one hundred and fifty-seven forms of speaker and addressee, one hundred and six forms of speaker and referent, and forty-four forms of speaker and bystander. In addition, there are two hundred and seventeen forms of absolute social deixis consisting of two hundred and seventeen forms of authorized recipients. Then, the results related to function related to social deixis show that twenty-five utterances function to portray social distance, one hundred and ninety-four utterances function to show social status between speech participants, two hundred and twenty-one utterances function to describe formality scale, and eighty-four utterances whose function is to measure two functional scales.
