Abstract
This research was conducted to answer the question of how the reality of the Instagram filter addiction phenomenon using Marshall McLuhan's technological determinism theory paradigm. To answer this, a mixed methods research method was used, with quantitative data supporting qualitative data. The approach itself uses a phenomenological approach with the object of research of 12th grade students of MAN 2 Yogyakarta. From the survey results to 153 out of 206 12th grade students of MAN 2 Yogyakarta (53 absent), 13% of them indicated addiction to Instagram filters. Then, from these 13%, researchers conducted interviews, observations, and documentation to the object of research. The results show that there is a diversity of addictions as indicated by the existence of students who really feel all the symptoms of filter addiction, some only feel some symptoms, and there are students who do not feel any symptoms regarding filter addiction. In addition to symptoms, other things felt by informants when using filters are increased self-confidence, high motivation to use, high intensity of use, emergence of anxiety, disruption of rest time, and making filters a stimulus of happiness. These results show that the three assumptions of the theory of technological determinism are proven correct. Namely, the media determines every human action in society, the media determines the perception and organization of every action in society, and the media acts as a world connector.
