Abstract
Generation Z is known for their closeness to social media since childhood, leading to potential social media addiction. Loneliness and fear of missing out can lead to this condition. This study explores the relationship between loneliness and fear of missing out among Generation Z social media users. The research involved 511 Generation Z students who use social media from public universities in Yogyakarta, selected through quota sampling techniques. The correlational quantitative method was used with three research instruments, namely Bergen's Social Media Addiction Scale with a reliability of 0.709, UCLA Loneliness Scale Version-3 with a reliability of 0.914, and Online Fear of Missing Out Scale with a reliability of 0.903. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses of this study. The findings show that loneliness and fear of missing out have a positive and significant correlation with social media addiction among Generation Z students who use social media in Yogyakarta simultaneously or partially. The effective contribution given simultaneously is 31.8%, while partially by loneliness is 10% and fear of missing out is 21.8%. The results of the difference test based on gender and university show that there is no significant difference in the level of social media addiction, loneliness, or fear of missing out in Generation Z students who use social media in Yogyakarta. These findings provide practical implications regarding the need for interventions to reduce social media addiction caused by loneliness and fear of missing out.
