Abstract

Z Generation who grew up with digital technology is vulnerable to social media addiction. One trait that is believed the predictor of social media addiction is narcissism. This study aims to determine the relationship between narcissism and social media addiction in generation Z. The method used was quantitative correlation involving 271 (39 male, 232 female) generation Z in Java Island taken using quota sampling. The research instruments used were the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI-16) adapted version and Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS) adapted version. Data analysis was conducted using simple linear regression analysis. The results showed that there was correlation between narcissism on social media addiction with contribution from narcissism 4%. Significant differences are seen in the level of social media addiction between male and female groups, where male tend to have higher levels of social media addiction compared to female. The results of this study provide theoretical implications that in understanding social media addiction, it is necessary to look at the narcissism trait that exists in each individual
