Abstract

The diversity of cultures and thick customs owned by Yogyakarta, in addition to being an advantage, can also be an obstacle. These barriers can be differences in language, culture, and different norms of politeness. One of them was experienced by students from East Nusa Tenggara who attended university in Yogyakarta. On the other hand, the existence of some news that contains negative behavior of Easterners in Yogyakarta can be an obstacle when East Nusa Tenggara students communicate with the local community. The researcher is interested in analyzing how the strategy of uncertainty reduction in cultural adaptation poses in East Nusa Tenggara students in Yogyakarta. Drawing upon the uncertainty reduction theory by Charles Berger and Richard Calabresse and also Intercultural Adaptation theory by Young Yun Kim. The subject of this study is East Nusa Tenggara students who migrated to Yogyakarta for at least two years. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the study conducted in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation for data collection. The results of this study found that informants carried out strategies, namely with active, passive and interactive strategies to mitigate uncertainty. Findings of this study show that there are uncertainties experienced by informants, namely cognitive and behavioral uncertainties. This can be seen in the lack of language skills, especially Javanese language, which can hinder interaction with the Yogyakarta community. Thus, informants need to make efforts to reduce the uncertainty that can be seen from the nine axioms that have been carried out. There is one factor that influences informants to uncertainty reduction during the adaptation process in Yogyakarta. This factor is kinship or the presence of someone from the same region. It was also explained in the discussion that informants have undergone four phases of cultural adaptation: honeymoon phase, frustration phase, readjustment phase, and resolution phase. In conclusion, East Nusa Tenggata students acquiring knowledge with intercultural communication skills to reduce uncertainty. So that they are able to adapt to a new culture and environment.
