Abstract

Geographically, the Special Region of Yogyakarta is an area that has natural conditions that are at risk of threats and increase the risk of disasters. Especially those affected by human activities and other complex factors. One of the factors that are indispensable in handling a disaster is disaster communication. Nowadays, social media serves as an important tool for disaster communication as a means of early warning. Government agencies have begun to use Instagram social media, one of which is BPBD DIY. This study aims to find out how Disaster Communication is carried out by the Yogyakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency in reducing disaster risk through Instagram. This research method is qualitative descriptive with data collection methods through interviews, documentation and observation to understand how BPBD DIY uses Instagram as a disaster communication tool in disaster risk reduction. The findings of the study show that every foundation in disaster communication through Instagram carried out by BPBD DIY plays a significant role in building public awareness of disaster risk reduction through both actions to reduce threats and vulnerabilities and in increasing people's ability to deal with disasters.
