Abstract
Islamophobic sentiment in India has been growing with many hate speeches and acts of intolerance against Muslims since Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is in power in India. Islamophobic narratives are now increasingly overt by using films as a propaganda medium to influence audiences' attitudes and behavior towards Muslim groups or communities, one of which is through films The Kerala Story. Therefore, this research aims to measure the frequency of Islamophobic propaganda techniques found in films The Kerala Story and analyze the Islamophobic propaganda techniques used in the film The Kerala Story. This research uses a content analysis method with an approach mix method model sequential explanatory, namely by conducting quantitative research first then continuing with qualitative data collection. The unit of analysis in this research is to look at the use of Islamophobic propaganda techniques in film scenes The Kerala Story which contains techniques Name Calling, Glittering Generality, Transfer, Testimony, Plain Folks, Card Stacking, and Bandwagon. The research results show that the technique Name Calling and Card Stacking were the most frequently used techniques, at 32.1% and 30.7% respectively. Another technique discovered is Transfer (19,2%), Testimony (10,2%), Glittering Generality (2,5%), Plain Folks (2.5%), and Bandwagon (2,5%). Film The Kerala Story uses powerful propaganda techniques to spread Islamophobic narratives. The techniques used include giving negative nicknames to Islam, tactics of selecting extreme cases and distorting facts, transferring the meaning of religious symbols negatively, and exploiting negative experiences regarding Islam. Overall, the film seeks to create a negative image of Islam, forming prejudice and spreading fear towards the Muslim community, thereby potentially deepening social polarization in India.
