Abstract

Father has important roles in children’s social-emotional development and intellectual, especially on character development and communication skill. However, not all children get enough of the father’s role in their lives (fatherless), both physycally and emotionally. This research analyzes how the role of fathers and family’s communication in fatherless families are displayed in YouTube content entitled Bapak Pendiem. Now, YouTube as a digital media is not only an entertaiment platform, but also reflects social realities that are close to people’s lives, so that it can influence society’s perspective about the role of fathers in the family. A qualitative approach with Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic theory was used to examine the meaning contained in the content. The Result of this reseach shows that the father character is represented as cold, indifferent and not involved in raising children, only acting as a provider. Lack of communication has a negative impact on childern’s psychology, such as causing envy dan despair. However, towards the end of his life, the father figure began to show a more active role, such as becoming a protector, educator, decision maker, supporter, and friend and playmate for his child. This change is also marked by a more open and supportive communication. This finding confirms that father involvement and good communication play an important role in children's character and psychological development.
