Abstract

Bullying is a form of violence that is often unaware of its existence, especially in the educational environment. Although it is not always visible physically, the practice of bullying in verbal and social forms can have a serious impact on the victim. Mass media, including films, play an important role in shaping people's perceptions of social issues like these. Therefore, it is important to examine how films represent bullying and shape social constructs in the minds of viewers. One of the films that raises this issue is Munkar, a religious horror film set in Islamic boarding school life. This research aims to find out how the construction of the reality of bullying shown in the film Munkar. This research uses the theory of social reality construction by Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann which explains that social reality is formed through three stages, namely externalization, objectification, and internalization. In addition, this analysis was also aided by Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotics to identify the signs of bullying that appeared in the film. The results of the study show that the film Munkar shapes the social reality about bullying through visual narratives and dialogues that normalize verbal, physical, social, and relational violence. At the externalization stage, the filmmakers present bullying as a reaction to individuals who are perceived as not conforming to group norms. Objectivity can be seen from the way the film presents bullying without criticism, so it seems natural in the storyline. If this is not addressed critically, the audience then internalizes that such behavior is a normal part of group life, especially in the pesantren environment.
