Abstract
This research is motivated by the lack of teachers and the low quality of teachers in Indonesia, marked by the current number of teachers of only 3.8 million, still less than the ideal number of 4.2 million teachers. The government, in this case the Ministry of Religion, is holding a program to address the lack of teachers and improve the quality of teachers in the form of teacher professional education.This study aims to determine the effect of the Teacher Professional Education Program (PPG) class of 2023 FITK UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta on improving teacher competence in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. Teacher competence is a key factor in improving the quality of education, so it is important to measure how much influence the PPG program has in supporting the development of teacher professionalism. This study uses a quantitative approach with a survey method. The population in this study were all PPG participants of class 2023 who were assigned in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, with a sample of 150 teachers selected from a population of 238 teachers. Data collection was carried out through a questionnaire that had been tested for validity by calculating the significance value and its reliability through the Cronbach's Alpha test to ensure that the instrument used was valid and reliable. Data analysis used simple linear regression to determine how much influence the PPG program had on teacher competence with the help of the IBM SPSS Statistics version 25 application to obtain accurate results. The results of the study indicate that the 2023 PPG Program FITK UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta has a positive and significant influence on improving teacher competence. This is evidenced by a significance value of 0.000 <0.05 and a beta coefficient value of 0.888 or 89% which shows a significant contribution from the teacher professional education program to teacher competence. Thus, it can be concluded that the PPG Program is one of the strategic instruments in improving teacher quality in the Special Region of Yogyakarta.
