Abstract

This study aims to examine how meanings related to radicalism are constructed and conveyed in five YouTube sermons by Ustadz Felix Siauw, namely Logika Khilafah (The Logic of Caliphate), Krisis Palestina Itu Masalah Agama (The Palestinian Crisis Is a Religious Matter), Takut Khilafah (Fear of the Caliphate), Oknum Radikal (Radical Elements), and Bagaimana Cara Menyikapi Toleransi dalam Agama (How to Respond to Tolerance in Religion). The focus is directed towards analyzing the signs, symbols, and narratives that shape these constructions of meaning. This research employs a qualitative method using Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis (denotation, connotation, and myth), combined with Berger and Luckmann’s social construction theory, as well as Shoemaker and Reese’s hierarchy of influences model. The findings reveal that, at the denotative level, the messages in these videos appear as normative religious explanations. However, at the connotative level, ideological content emerges, positioning certain concepts, such as the caliphate, as an ideal and emphasizing religious identity as the primary foundation. At the myth level, these ideas are naturalized as absolute truths, with narratives framing alternative systems such as democracy and the nation-state as differing from the Islamic values presented. This meaning construction is subtly delivered through linguistic strategies, historical framing, moral dichotomies, and narratives of group solidarity. The findings are identified within six interconnected dimensions: reinforcing cross-border religious ideology, offering critical interpretations of the state system, asserting absolute truth, socially categorizing based on identity, constructing collective victimhood narratives, and limiting social interactions on the basis of belief. The process unfolds through the stages of externalization, objectivation, and internalization, and is influenced by individual, media routine, organizational, institutional, and ideological factors. This study concludes that meanings related to radicalism can be shaped through language and narrative approaches that do not explicitly advocate violence, yet build a strong framework centered on specific values and identities. These findings provide valuable insights for strengthening media literacy and fostering critical understanding of religious messages in digital spaces.
