Abstract

The presence of advances in information technology in the 21st century has led to an information explosion. As a result, a lot of information that is not necessarily true can be accessed by the public. Instagram social media is one of the places where hoax information appears and is easily accessible, especially among young people. Therefore, to deal with the information explosion, Instagram social media users must have good media literacy. The level of media literacy can be seen through individual factors and environmental factors. This study describes the level of media literacy in UIN Sunan Kalijaga Library Science students based on European Commission standards. The purpose of this study is to determine the level of media literacy possessed by UIN Sunan Kalijaga Library Science students. This research is a descriptive research with a quantitative approach. The subjects of this research are students of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Library Science class of 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. While the object of this research is Instagram social media literacy. The population in this study were students of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Library Science who were active students. Sampling using accidental sampling technique using the Slovin formula which resulted in 83 respondents. The primary data collection method used by researchers is questionnaires and interviews as secondary data. Data measurement uses a Likert scale with a 4-point scale. The data analysis that researchers use is percentage and mean. The result of this study is that the level of media literacy in UIN Sunan Kalijaga Library Science students is at a very high level with a percentage value of 82.1%. In this study, researchers recommend further studies to adopt a qualitative approach to find out in depth the impact of media literacy education on Library Science students.
