Abstract

Language deviation is the use of language that deviates from the natural and standard language commonly used. Language deviation is used by the author with the aim of achieving a beautiful effect. In poetry, the language deviation exists, as in the poems From Darkness Into Light. This study aims to examine the types and roles of language deviation in selected poems From Darkness Into Light by Helwa. This research uses qualitative descriptive methods. The data collection method in this research is observation. The data source of this study is ten selected poems From Darkness Into Light by Helwa with Sugiyono's analysis technique with stages including, collecting data, data display, then conclusions. Based on the results of the study, the types of language deviations found by researchers are graphological deviations and semantic deviations. The results of the study found a total of twenty-six language deviations, namely thirteen graphological deviations and thirteen semantic deviations. Graphological deviations appear mostly in the misuse of capital letters in the middle of the line. Semantic deviation occurs mostly through semantic oddity, transference meaning and honest deception.
