Abstract

Language is a communication tool that has the necessary part in creating communication. In this study, the researcher wants to analyze the language style because language style is an essential aspect of our daily life. The researcher chooses an inappropriate language style because that style can cause a problem between speakers, either an inappropriate response arises, or a misunderstanding arises. The researcher chooses ‘The Breadwinner’ movie as the main object. This research aims to analyze the language style which is used by all characters that are inappropriate to the context and situation in ‘The Breadwinner’ movie and to describe the factors that affect all characters in 'The Breadwinner' movie to speak inappropriate language style to the context and situation. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods. Theory by Martin Joos (1967) and Holmes (1992) are used by the researcher to analyze the data. For the result, the researcher finds 33 data of an inappropriate language style. It consists of 3 data on casual style in intimate situations, 9 data on consultative style in formal situations, 19 data on casual style in formal situations, and 2 data on consultative style in intimate situations. The most frequent factor that affects all characters speaking inappropriately is the functions, representing 11 data. In contrast, the lowest factor is topic; setting, function, topic; and participant, function, and topic representing 1 data each from 33 data in total. From the result, it can be concluded that the highest use of an inappropriate language style in ‘The Breadwinner’ movie is casual style in formal situations, Hence, they should adjust the language they use to the context and situation at the time when the conversation takes place to minimize misunderstandings between speakers.
