Abstract

This study aims to examine the phenomenon of phubbing and social media usage as inhibitors of social interaction among adolescents at Masjid Baiturrahim, as well as to explore strategies to reduce this behavior. Phubbing is defined as the act of ignoring conversation partners by focusing more on smartphones. This research employs a qualitative approach using field research, conducted directly in Dukuh Gebang, Desa Trosono, Kecamatan Parang, Magetan, East Java. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation, with informants consisting of the mosque’s adolescent administrators and active members in religious and social activities. The findings indicate that phubbing driven by excessive social media use negatively impacts the quality of face-to-face interaction, including distraction, feelings of being ignored, reduced warmth in interactions, and weakened group cohesion. This phenomenon is further reinforced by fear of missing out (FoMO), leading adolescents to focus more on their digital devices during interactions, reducing attention to conversation partners, lowering relational closeness, and shifting communication from face-to-face to online interactions. The study also finds strategies to reduce phubbing, such as limiting device usage during activities, enforcing phone storage rules during meetings, and implementing activities that promote direct communication and collaboration, effectively enhance social engagement, strengthen relationships, and restore meaningful social interaction among the mosque’s adolescents.
