Abstract

When digital visibility is silenced by algorithmic repression, how is a "secret language" or algospeak born to circumvent it? And furthermore, how does this adaptive strategy transform from a mere individual response into a collective counter-hegemonic force? This study examines the phenomenon of Instagram shadow banning, a form of algorithmic repression that restricts the visibility of pro- Palestinian content. In response, users employ strategies, primarily algospeak, to disseminate counter-narratives against the dominant discourse. This thesis aims to (1) analyze the construction of pro-Palestinian counter-narratives by the Instagram accounts @gen.saladin, @taubatters, and @bravevoyager.id, specifically how they leverage algospeak to circumvent shadow banning, and (2) explain the role of follower participation in amplifying these narratives into a collective counterhegemonic force. Using an analytical qualitative approach grounded in the critical paradigm, this research combines Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to examine content construction (9 selected posts) and Jenkins' Participatory Culture framework to analyze follower engagement. Findings reveal that creators function as "organic intellectuals," who strategically construct counter-narratives across micro, meso, and macro dimensions using algospeak and pop culture references in an ideological "war of position." Furthermore, followers are not passive recipients but active agents who transform individual content into collective counter-hegemony through distinct forms of participation: Affiliation, Expression, Collaboration, and Circulation, with circulation serving as a direct resistance to shadow banning. This study concludes that the interaction between content creators and followers forms a dynamic cycle of digital counter-hegemony, where platform repression paradoxically fuels innovation and collective solidarity among subaltern groups.
