Abstract
The phenomenon of using a second account on Instagram is a crucial Impression Management strategy for female students at UIN Sunan Kalijaga serving as Campus Ambassadors, given the high social demands to maintain an ideal and flawless public image. The resulting identity conflict between the ideal self and the need for an authentic self-expression drives the use of the second account as a private space for emotional release. This descriptive qualitative study analyzes how the five principles of Communication Privacy Management (CPM) are implemented to frame the five Impression Management (IM) tactics (Jones & Pitman) on this secondary platform. Data were collected via in-depth interviews with five informants and validated using triangulation with a Clinical Psychologist. The findings indicate that all five IM tactics (Ingratiation, Exemplification, Self-Promotion, Supplication, and Intimidation) were selectively employed. The five CPM principles consistently function as an obligatory boundary-guarding framework ensuring the success of the desired IM. Specifically, Privacy Ownership and Privacy Control are manifested through the establishment of strict Boundary Rules, such as using private settings and manually selecting the audience. A significant finding is that negative responses or anticipated anxiety trigger Boundary Turbulence, which informants respond to by renegotiating privacy rules. This is validated as a healthy coping mechanism to maintain psychological boundaries. Essentially, the second account is operated as a 'Private Front Stage' managed by CPM to balance the demands of public image and the need for self-authenticity.
