Abstract

Social media has become an important platform for political parties to convey strategic issues, including gender equality. This study aims to explore how gender equality is represented on the Instagram account of DPP PKB and how audiences interpret these representations. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis, which consists of three levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. The data were obtained from the analysis of 10 posters uploaded on the Instagram account of DPP PKB and interviews with 6 audience members to enrich the interpretation. The findings reveal that DPP PKB represents gender equality issues through various themes, such as cases of sexual violence, online loans, weak law enforcement, as well as women’s roles in work, achievements, and politics. These representations portray women not only as victims but also as active, independent, and empowered subjects. Furthermore, audience interpretations indicate a positive reception of the conveyed messages, although some still perceive that the implementation of gender equality in society has not been fully achieved. This study concludes that the Instagram account of DPP PKB functions both as a communication medium and as a tool for public education regarding the importance of gender equality. These findings are expected to contribute to the study of digital media representation and gender studies within the field of communication.
