Abstract

Javanese Sufism represents the spiritual expression of Islamic mysticism in the Nusantara, integrating local values through symbolism and Sufi narratives. Among the classical texts that depict the spiritual journey (suluk) are Serat Dewa Ruci and Suluk Linglung by Sunan Kalijaga. This study is motivated by the need to understand the continuity and differences in the concept of suluk in these two texts, which illustrate the encounter between Islamic Sufism and Javanese culture. The main research question concerns how the concept of suluk is portrayed in Serat Dewa Ruci and Suluk Linglung, as well as the similarities and differences between the two within the framework of Javanese Sufism. This research employs a qualitative method with a philosophical-comparative approach. The primary data consist of the texts Serat Dewa Ruci and Suluk Linglung, while the secondary data are derived from relevant literature on Sufism, Javanese mysticism, and previous studies. Data collection was conducted through documentation, followed by symbolic, philosophical, and comparative analysis to interpret the meaning of the spiritual journey within both texts. The findings reveal that both Serat Dewa Ruci and Suluk Linglung emphasize the spiritual journey of a sālik (seeker) through the stages of shari‘ah, tariqah, haqiqah, and ma‘rifah, with the ultimate goal of attaining ma’rifatullāh or manunggaling kawula Gusti (the union of the servant and the Divine). Their similarity lies in the emphasis on self-purification, control of desires, and realization of divine consciousness. The difference, however, is that Serat Dewa Ruci is symbolic-mythological with roots in Śiwa-Buddhist elements that have been Islamized, while Suluk Linglung is more historical-religious in nature, featuring explicit and systematic Sufi teachings.
