Abstract
This research compares the translation procedures and quality of Islamic terms in the Indonesian subtitle of The Life of Muhammad movie translated by two translators, Artficial and Henndri. It aims to identify and compare the procedures used, evaluate the accuracy and acceptability of the translations, and investigate the impact of these procedures on translation quality. Utilizing Newmark’s theory of translation procedures (1988) and Nababan’s quality assessment framework (2012), this qualitative study employs listening, note-taking, and Miles & Huberman’s data analysis techniques. Findings reveal that both translators used procedures in common such as transference, naturalization, through translation, literal translation, cultural equivalent, recognized translation, expansion, functional equivalent, reduction, and modulation, with transference and naturalization as the most dominant. Artficial also used five additional procedures: notes, couplets, transposition, descriptive equivalent, and synonymy. Both translators achieved high-quality translations, with Artficial scoring higher (2.89) than Henndri (2.79). Procedures like transference, naturalization, through translation, cultural equivalent, recognized translation, reduction, expansion, couplets, notes, transposition, and descriptive equivalent positively impacted accuracy, while naturalization, cultural equivalent, recognized translation, through translation, notes, transposition, descriptive equivalent, and synonymy contribute positively on acceptability. Conversely, functional equivalent and synonymy negatively affected accuracy. However, none of the translation procedures affected acceptability negatively. Finally, literal translation produced mixed results: positive for Artficial but negative for Henndri due to implementation errors.
