Abstract

This research aims to describe the behavior of library users in searching for information at Grhatama Pustaka Library. This type of research is descriptive qualitative research. The data collection methods used in this research are observation, interview, and documentation. The technique of determining informants in this study using purposive sampling technique. The data analysis used Miles and Huberman’s theory of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The theory of information seeking behavior used in this study is David Ellis’ theory which suggest 8 (eight) stages in information seeking. The results of this study indicate that information seeking behavior by library users based on David Ellis’ theory at Grhatama Pustaka Library goes through six stages, namely 1) starting stage by determining the topic or information to be sought, 2) browsing stage by searching for information in the library, 3) differentiating stage by selecting information sources obtained as needed, 4) extracting stage by digging up information to be used, 5) verifying stage by checking back the information that has been obtained, 6) ending stage by utilizing the information obtained as needed. There are 2 (two) stages of David Ellis’ information seeking behavior that are not done perfectly by all users, namely the chaining and monitoring stages. In the process of searching for information based on David Ellis’ theory at Grhatama Pustaka Library, at browsing stage the library users experience several obtacles, namely difficulty or confusion in finding the location of the desired collection, the unavailability of the collection on the shelf even though the collection is available in the OPAC, and difficulty getting the desired collection or topic.
