Abstract

The news of the Houthi blockade and attacks on Israeli entity ships has been widely covered by the news media, especially the Al-Masirah media which represents the Houthi party and the The Times of Israel Arabic media which represents the Israeli party. The perception of the news built by both of them is contradictory which leads to a propaganda war. The propaganda war between the two media tries to shape the perception of Arab society and Arabic readers about the conflict between the Houthi group and Israel which has the potential to cause division in Arab society. Therefore, this study aims to reveal the propaganda war between the two media by analyzing the forms of propaganda and the background of why the propaganda war occurred between the two media using Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis theory. The results of the study show that Al-Masirah media tries to legitimize the Yemeni Armed Forces' attacks on ships owned by Israeli businessmen. Meanwhile, The Times of Israel Arabic media tries to weaken the existence of the Houthi group by using the term Houthi rebel group and placing the Houthi as the guilty party for the increase in international prices. The background of the propaganda war is the opposing ideological differences between Al-Masirah's ideology, namely Neo-Zaidism and The Times of Israel Arabic, namely Zionism. Neo-Zaidism shows a Xenophobic attitude towards Israel which is based on anti-Imperialism beliefs. Meanwhile, Zionism shows an attitude that maintains the integrity of the Jewish state from various threats.
