Abstract

Communication management is the process of managing the exchange of messages in a planned manner to achieve mutual understanding, build trust, and align objectives between various parties. This study examines the communication management strategies of the BPBD of Yogyakarta in disseminating information about the eruption of Mount Merapi. Amidst the threat of unpredictable volcanic activity, BPBD Yogyakarta plays a central role as an information manager so that the public does not panic. The main focus of this study is to see how the technical data processing by experts is translated into simple messages that can be understood by all groups. Through a qualitative approach, this study examines the stages of message planning, media selection, and how the BPBD deals with communication obstacles in the field to ensure the safety of residents in disaster-prone areas. The results of the study show that BPBD DIY uses a one-door communication strategy that combines digital technology with local wisdom. The conclusion of this study confirms that transparent and participatory communication management is key to disaster mitigation. The success of conveying information about the Merapi eruption was driven by high public trust in BPBD DIY as the main source of news.
