Abstract

The library in the age of information technology is an information center for all users. It serves as a center of science in business, labor, academic and governmental sectors. Hence, it is required to continuously improve the quality of services to use the existing facilities, and to be a comfortable place to learn. It requires sufficient intensity of illumination in the reading room to support users’ activity. The lighting in the library determines the comfort of doing activity. Based on the exposure above, this paper aims to understand how the lighting in the reading room of the library can make the users comfortable in Centre for Local Library and Archive, Special Region of Yogyakarta. This type of the research is quantitative research. The research also examines the connection between the intensity of lighting and the readers’ convenience in Centre for Local Library and Archive, Special Region of Yogyakarta. Based on the analysis of the data by using the product moment correlation, the correlation coefficient between the lighting and the readers’ convenience is 0.401 with p = 0.043 or p <0.05. This proves that there is a significantly positive relationship between the lighting and the convenience of reading. The results show that on the first floor the large of room is 600m2; its armatures are 10 pieces; there are 33 pieces of lights; and the lights that switch on are 26 pieces. The average of light intensity in the morning is 107.56 lux, in the daytime turned to 103 lux, in the afternoon turned again to 90.56 lux, and in the night becomes 85.89 lux. Meanwhile, on the second floor the large of room is 600m2; its armatures are 3 pieces; there are 23 pieces of lamps; and the lights that switch on are 17 pieces. The average of light intensity in the morning is 117 lux, in the daytime turned out to be 105.57 lux, in the afternoon turned to 62 lux, and in the night turned to 59.14 lux. The entire measurement result shows that an average of the lighting on the first and the second floor is 92.02 lux. This average does not fulfill the standardyet, i.e. 300 lux; therefore, to fulfill it, the lighting is necessary to add 207.98 lux. Based on those data, the lighting in the reading rooms in Centre for Local Library and Archive, Special Region of Yogyakarta is not maximally comfortable yet.
