Abstract

This study formulates four main issues: how the motivation of parents in fostering students' interest in reading, how students reading interest, how high the relationship between motivation parents and students reading interest is. This study aims to describe the motivation level of parents in fostering students' reading interest, to describe the level of students' interest, to describe how high the relationship of parents' motivation and students reading interest at students of SMA Negeri 1 Kota Mungkid, Magelang. This research is a sampling rcsearehwith by 75 respondents. To obtain complete data, the researcher uses data collect* methods, namely questionnaires, interviews and documentation. The results of parents' motivation and students reading interestuses the formula of mean and grand mean, the relationship between parents' motivation and reading interest uses product moment correlation formula. The results motivation of parents is in the low category and students' interest in reading is low category. While the relationship between motivation of parents and students' interest at 5% significance level with N = 75 at 0.227. Thus, the count r is greater than r table (0.999> 0.227). It shows that the coefficient correlation between the motivation of parents with an interest in reading there is a very strong correlation or very high. And the level of the relationship between parents' motivation and students' interest in reading shows 0,999 includes in the category of 0.800 to 1,00 between the variables X and Y there is a very strong correlation or very high. This research is expected to give knowledge to the parents in increasing students' interest in reading, parents should be more concerned about the student's interest in reading with asking them to fill a diary on a regularly and then made as reading book. It is better parents need more time for their children to take them to the bookstore at least once a month to buy a book or just to read it. Keywords: parental motivation, interest in reading
