Abstract

ABSTRAK This study examines the influence of need assessments on collection development at the library of the Pondok Pesantren Al-Munawwir Kompleks Q Krapyak Yogyakarta. This research is aimed at understanding: 1) the extent to which the need assessments might affect collection development at the library of the Pondok Pesantren Al-Munawwir Kompleks Q Krapyak Yogyakarta and 2) the way in which the need assessments are likely to correlate to the collection development at the library of the Pesantren. This study is a quantitative-descriptive piece of research which focuses on understanding the influence of the dependent variable, that is, 'need assessments' on the independent variable, that is, 'collection development' at the library of the Pondok Pesantren Al-Munawwir Kompleks Q Krapyak Yogyakarta. This research involves both primary and secondary data. In terms of data collection, this research uses questionnairre as a major technique for collecting the primary data. Indeed, the questionnaire consists of nine questions used to examine the independent variable and seven questions in order to examine the dependent variable. In this sense, the data collection involves 69 respondents, in which they are valid to be analysed. In addition, in an attempt to collect the secondary data, this research was based on the documentary analysis of the documents taken from the library of Pondok Pesantren Al-Munawwir Kompleks Q Krapyak Yogyakarta. Having collected the data, they were quantitatively analysed by using the regression analysis. This study concludes that there is a positive and significant correlation between need assessments and collection development. This can be seen from the probability value or p-value at 0,000 ( 0,005) and the percentage of its determination coefficient which constitutes 65,9%. This means that the collection development which is influenced by other variables constitutes 34,1%. Given this, it is worth noting that there is a significant influence between the need assessments on collection development. Therefore, such an assessment can be used as a useful reference for collection development. Nevertheless, it is also important to note that collection development is influenced not only by the need assessments, but also by other variables such as, development of literature or books, up-to-date information, he capable librarians, more public access, circumstances and culture of the Pondok, and the commitment and consistency of the librarians on the vision and mission of library development. However, it is beyond the scope of this study to discuss these variables in details.
