Abstract

Every company has an organizational culture, where the culture is explored, owned, and held by members as the identity of an organization that distinguishes it from other organizations. This study aims to: (1) explore the cultural characteristics of Muslim batik entrepreneurs in the Laweyan Batik Industry, Surakarta. (2) Analyze the values that underlie the cultural characteristics of Muslim batik entrepreneurs in the Laweyan Batik Industry, Surakarta, and (3) Explore the role of the organizational culture of Muslim batik entrepreneurs in the Laweyan Batik Industry, Surakarta. The research locations are Batik Putra Laweyan, Batik Merak Manis, Batik Mahkota, and Batik Gres Tenan. This type of research uses descriptive-qualitative research with a case studies approach. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. Interviews were conducted on eight informants, leaders, and staff of the Laweyan Surakarta batik organization. The unit of research analysis is the organization of the batik company, which the Muslim batik entrepreneur manages. While exploring the depth of the basic values of organizational culture, the community around Laweyan is involved. The data analysis of this research was carried out in three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion making. The study results explain that there are five characteristics of organizational culture in Muslim batik entrepreneurs in Laweyan, Surakarta. The characteristics of the organizational culture are a culture that prioritizes hardworking attitudes and pays attention to the element of togetherness, the element of sincerity, the value of perseverance, and the element of work responsibility. The values that underlie the characteristics of organizational culture, among others, are the legacy of the character of Muslim traders during the national movement, environmental changes, the formation of business formalization, the existence of business competition, the nature of congregational prayers, strategies of market expansion, tolerance attitude, understanding of Islam, faith motivation, the role of government, job challenges, and cultural preservation. The role of organizational culture in business development so that it is able to survive in the competitive business era and the Covid-19 pandemic, among others, plays a role in developing attitudes, developing business and industry, creating conducive working conditions, creating quality, and work commitment.
