Abstract

The interaction of generation Z in cyberspace is now increasingly limitless, giving rise to negative behavior, namely toxic disinhibition online effect. This behavior is caused by anonymity and can lead to problems such as trauma, feelings of hopelessness, and even suicide. This study aims to determine the relationship between anonymity and toxic disinhibition online effect in generation Z social media users on the island of Java. The method used was quantitative correlation with 280 participating subjects (35 males, 245 females, mean age 21.96) of the Z generation in Java who were taken using the quota sampling. This study uses 2 measurement tools, namely anonymity scale and scale toxic disinhibition online effect. Data analysis was performed using a correlation test product moment from Pearsons. The results of the study show that there is a positive relationship between anonymity and toxic disinhibition online effect in generation Z social media users on the island of Java. This means that the proposed hypothesis is accepted with a significance value of 0.000 (P <0.05). Anonymity variable effective contribution to toxic disinhibition online effect by 16.6%. These results have practical implications regarding the need for behavior reduction interventions toxic disinhibition online effect caused by anonymity.
