Abstract

The high number of mental health problems in society is an alarm that makes the attitude of seeking professional help and mental health literacy important for everyone. This study aims to determine whether there is a correlation between mental health literacy and attitudes to seeking professional help in young adult Instagram users. The method used is quantitative correlational The research sample was obtained by quota sampling technique. Participants in this study were 126, consisting of 33 male and 93 female young adults in Java. Data collection in this study used scales; the Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help: A Shortened Form and Considerations for Research (ATSPPH-SF) scale and Multicomponent Mental Health Literacy Measure (MMHLM) which has been adapted to Indonesian. The data was analyzed by the Pearson Product Moment correlation test. The results showed there is a positive correlation between mental health literacy and professional help-seeking attitudes in young adult Instagram users with a significance value of 0.000 (p<0.05). The effective contribution of mental health literacy to the attitude of seeking professional help is 40%, indicated by an R square value of 0.400. These results provide theoretical implications that mental health literacy is important to be improved, thus it can strengthen attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help.
